Zhytomyr Oblast Children’s Hospital

Zhytomyr Oblast Children’s Hospital was founded in 1984. It is a multiprofile treatment, diagnosing, organizational and methodical center rendering specialized aid to children of the oblast.

Its bed capacity is 430. The consultative clinic can receive 240 patients per one shift. Around 125 doctors and 400 paramedics work at the hospital.

The hospital works in 25 profiles and has over 30 units, 23 of them being diagnostic and treatment centers. Eight specialized centers function at the hospital:

• Immuno-allergology;
• Onco-hematology;
• Neonatal;
• Rehabilitation of children with organic lesions of the nervous system and mental disturbances;
• Center for surgical correction of birth defects;
• Center to promote breastfeeding;
• Diabetes center;
• Acute injuries center.

In 1992 the Zhytomyr Oblast Neonatology Center was created on the basis of the hospital, including newborn’s anesthesiology and intensive care, newborn’s pediatrics, and newborn’s pathology units. Founding the Center allowed to reduce the death rate among newborns and increase the number of small premature infants restored to health. The Center also serves as a training base for medical personnel on primary reanimation and early newborn’s reanimation.

In 2000, the Zhytomyr Oblast Medical Rehabilitation Center for Children with Organic Lesions of the Nervous System and Mental Disturbances was created, allowing to reduce the rate of primary disablement related to nervous diseases in Zhytomyr oblast. A mobile rehabilitation team works at the center, making over 600 planned visits per year.

The hospital took part in many international programs and projects, in part, the Insular Diabetes pilot project (Green-Gross, Ukraine-Switzerland), project on acute lymphoblastic leukemia treatment (within the Ukrainian Cooperative Group framework). The hospital cooperated with the Chornobyl – Tiubu charitable fund (Japan), Children’s Hope International Charitable Organization (Sweden), Mission to Ukraine International Charitable Foundation (the US), and Children of Chernobyl - Foundation of Lower Saxony (Germany).

The hospital has a great experience in working with foreign medical institutions: Mayo Clinic (the US), Isakov Children’s Surgery Clinic at the Moscow Filatov Children’s Clinical Hospital No. 13 (Russia).
