November 29, 2007, the Board of Trustees of the Mykolayiv Oblast Children’s Hospital held a regular meeting. The event was held in the form of a Community’s Civic Responsibility: From Words to Action round table with the participation of the Board members, representatives of the public and mass media.
The meeting discussed micro projects implemented at the hospital, in part, the Hospital Grounds Development: Way to Children’s Recovery project supported by the Batory Foundation (Poland). The round table participants also broached the subject of the near-term prospects for the hospital’s material and technical basis development and applying to children innovative non-drug treatment methods. Besides, the meeting spoke about the need for raising the level of the staff’s skills, introducing telemedicine methods, and founding a Parents’ School.
The participants of the event placed high emphasis on the Creating a Complex System for Medical, Psychological, and Social Support for Children with Cancer and Their Parents project, aimed at securing a basis for a more effective treatment for children with cancer at the hospital’s Onco-Hematology Department. The project’s goals are:
- Work out and implement systemic complementary support for xhildren with cancer, including art therapy, social, psychological, and landscape therapy.
- Create a landscape park in the MOCH grounds with therapeutic playgrounds, providing landscape therapy for all children.
- Arrange the work of a Parents’ School to familiarize the parents with their rights and possibilities and improve their knowledge and skills in social and pedagogic rehabilitation of their children.
- Organize educational, social, and psychological work with the medical staff working with children with cancer, raising their skills, in part, through using telemedicine, and preventing professional burnout.
- Popularize the project’s progress and achievements among patient care institutions in Mykolayiv oblast and throughout Ukraine.
