February 28, 2009, Head of the Supervisory Board of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation Kateryna Yushchenko visited Lviv City Community Children’s Clinical Hospital.

Also present were Director General of McDonalds Ukraine Ian Borden, wife of the Head of Lviv Oblast State Administration Svitlana Kmit, Head of McDonalds Ukraine PR Dept. Mykhaylo Shuranov, Head of the Board of Directors of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation Oleksandr Maksymchuk, Director of the Medical Programs Dept. Vira Pavliuk, representatives of the local authorities and Ukraine 3000 Foundation.

Lviv City Community Children’s Clinical Hospital is the first of the 29 hospitals to obtain charitable aid within the framework of the World Children’s Day at McDonald’s joint action by Ukraine 3000 Foundation and McDonalds Ukraine, held in November 2008. This year the organizers have hit the record, raising UAH 1,607,000. This money was earmarked for purchasing neonatology equipment for children’s hospitals in all Ukraine’s oblasts. The hospitals, selected by the donators, submitted lists of the most required equipment. Having considered every hospital’s needs, the organizers conducted a bid competition for purchasing necessary items.

The Lviv hospital received two phototherapy systems and a phototherapy lamp to the total of UAH 72, 995. Mrs. Yushchenko and Mr. Borden gave the certificate to Head Physician Dr. Dmytro Kvit.

The guests toured the hospital’s premises, talked to its managers and medical staff. They visited the newborns’ pathology and newborns’ reanimation units. The philanthropists also stopped by at some wards, talking to little patients and their parents.

Addressing the audience, Mrs. Yushchenko said that improving children’s medicine was among the Ukraine 3000 Foundation’s top priorities. “In the years of our work on our medical programs we have brought almost UAH 43 million in donations,” she said.

Mrs. Kateryna thanked all Foundation’s partners, especially the McDonalds Ukraine company. She recalled that the Ukraine 3000 Foundation - McDonalds Ukraine cooperation had been going on for 4 years. Due to it, Ukraine’s children’s patient care institutions have received over 3.5 million hryvnias in charitable aid. In 2005, the family rooms unit was reconstructed at the National Cancer Institute’s children’s oncology. Due to the 2006 action, the philanthropists brought to 18 children’s hospitals modern cardiologic equipment. In 2007, 30 children’s hospitals in Ukraine obtained emergency aid equipment and children’s electric suctions.

Mrs. Yushchenko also mentioned the work of the Lviv City Community Children’s Clinical Hospital and thanked its head physician, Dr. Dmytro Kvit. She quoted the hospital as one of the Hospital to Hospital program’s most active participants. Dr. Kvit, in his turn, said that the Ukraine 3000 Foundation’s financial aid was rather substantial and amounted to almost half a million hryvnias. He recalled that, owing to the Foundation, two reanimation systems for newborns had been operating at the hospital since 2006, and four newborns incubators – since 2007. Earlier the Lviv hospital has twice received equipment from the Ukraine 3000 Foundation – McDonald’s Ukraine joint actions. Head physician said that the emergency aid kit, received in 2007, was helping to save around Ukraine 3000 Foundation children’s lives every year. He also thanked the Ukraine 3000 Foundation for its support in organizing trainings for Lviv doctors in Austria. Recall that, owing to the Foundation, Lviv City Community Children’s Clinical Hospital has got a reliable partner, the Barmherziger Bruder hospital (Eisenstadt, Austria).

These days the hospital is celebrating the tenth anniversary of their newborns’ reanimation unit. On this occasion, Mrs. Yushchenko presented the unit with an icon. Mrs. Kmit also brought in her present, a TV set to be used at the breastfeeding support school.

After that, Mrs. Yushchenko and Mr. Borden took part in the hospital’s Board of Trustees meeting. The Lviv hospital’s board is one of the country’s strongest, bringing it around a million hryvnias in financial aid. In part, due to the Board, the hospital has obtained a minibus, and a Volkswagen reanimobile, extremely needed by the hospital, was purchased thanks to the Lviv mayor. Head of the Board of Trustees Mykola Vozniuk supports the doctors’ trainings abroad financially. Every year members of the Board organize celebrations and presents for children on St. Nicholas’s Day.

Today’s board meeting was dedicated to mapping out a plan for the next year. The Ukraine 3000 Foundation representatives presented the Foundation’s latest initiative, the Dreams Come True action, where the Foundation grants the National Cancer Institute and Children’s Onco-Hematology and Marrow Transplantation Center at OKHMATDIT little patients’ wishes. The meeting also discussed ways of attracting additional funds for the hospital’s needs.

Kateryna Yushchenko is staying in Lviv oblast for a two-days working visit. Earlier, Mrs. Yushchenko visited the International Rehabilitation Clinic in Truskavets.
