March 31, 2009, a new modern echocardiography room was unveiled at Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast Children’s Clinical Hospital. It is equipped with an expert-class Philips HD 11 XE machine for ultrasonic diagnostics of cardiovascular system.
The high-quality picture and broad range of functions (color, impulse, and permanent Doppler sonography, etc.) makes it possible to thoroughly explore heart, valves, and major vessels and assess heart’s functioning. This allows to collect information to chose the strategy for further treatment for patients of various age categories: from newborns to adults.
Through online contact (i.e. sending ECG of a patient’s cardio pathology through the internet to a cardio surgery center) it is possible to obtain counsel from cardiologists and cardio surgeons from the research and practical children’s cardiology and cardio surgery center in Kyiv to decide upon the strategy of further medication, specialized surgical intervention, or case follow-up with ECG at a local cardiologist’s.
In the last five years, 750 children have been diagnosed with congenital heart defects in Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, 150 of them aged under 12 months, requiring urgent surgical correction. Around 30-40% newborns with congenital heart defects are in critical state and require urgent specialized surgical intervention.
Timely detection of babies with congenital heart defects through early clinical and localization diagnosis, adequate therapy, and timely cardio surgical intervention reduces the risks of newborn’s mortality caused by this pathology.
Echocardiography is a priority method of diagnosing congenital heart defects, whose major advantages are non-invasive examination, safety, the possibility of repeated heart and major vessels diagnosing, and control over the quality of treatment.
