The Ukrainian Initiative program continues, a joint action by the Children of Chornobyl USA International Project and International Children's Heart Foundation. The program envisages American doctors’ participation in rendering surgical and diagnostic aid to Ukrainian children with heart diseases.
In the two years of the program’s implementation, American doctors came to Ukraine five times and performed 155 surgical operations. The biggest number of children has been operated on in Kyiv (87) at the National Amosov Cardiovascular Surgery Institute. 41 surgeries have been performed at the Kharkiv General and Emergency Surgery Institute. At the Odesa Oblast Children’s Clinical Hospital American surgeons have preformed 27 operations.
The Ukrainian Initiative program is scheduled for 5 years. It is aimed at Ukrainian doctors’ studying modern attainments in children’s cardio surgery. American doctors perform surgeries, diagnostics, pre- and post-operative care together with Ukrainian colleagues and conduct trainings.
The American team includes children’s cardiovascular surgeon, children’s cardiologist, children’s anesthesiologist, children’s intensive care specialist, children’s nurses, children’s perfusionist, and children’s respiratory specialist.
In June 2008 the program’s organizers - Medical Director of the International Children's Heart Foundation Dr. William M. Novick and representatives of the Children of Chornobyl USA International Project – presented it to Mrs. Yushchenko and Ukraine 3000 Foundation members.
