11-Year-Old Ukrainian Gets Cardio Surgery in Italy

As it was reported earlier, the children’s cardio surgery department at St. Vicenzo Hospital in Taormina, Italy, within the framework of cooperation between Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation and L.I.CO.S. Onlus international cooperation laboratory on MELO project, admitted for urgent examination 11-year-old Ukrainian Ivan Sychyk, referred by Rivne Oblast Children’s Hospital. The diagnosis is: right-side transposition of great vessels, ventricular septal defect, and pulmonary artery stenosis.

December 16, 2009, leading Italian cardio surgeons operated on Ivan’s heart. The team consisted of head cardio surgeon Carmelo Mignosa, cardio surgeons Nello Dene, Salvatore Di Stefano, Massimo Mazzamuto, and Prof. Gaetano Gargiulo who arrived from Bologna specially for the surgery.

The boy was given the Rastelli procedure. The surgery was corrective, not palliative, and lasted around 7 hours. Such surgical interventions are very rare at this age; usually it is performed at the age of 12-24 months.

At present Ivan feels good and is undergoing rehabilitation to last for around two months.
