Children’s Cardio Surgeons of Ukraine and Italy Share Experience

March 13, 2010, a conference was held in Catania, Italy, dedicated to the initiatives and results of the MELO project activities.

The conference was held with the participation of the L.I.CO.S. Onlus Italian Laboratory for International Cooperation and Development and supported by Rotary Club Paterno-Alto Simeto. Ukraine was represented by member of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation Taras Tkachuk, a delegation from Rivne Oblast Children’s Hospital leaded by Head Physician Vitaly Boyko, and staff member of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine Oleksandra Bratsiun.

The conference saw a presentation of the results of MELO project implementation in Ukraine and its prospects.

Addressing the audience. Mr. Tkachuk red out an address from Head of the Supervisory Board of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation Kateryna Yushchenko. He also described the Foundation’s activities and the progress of its medical programs, in part, Hospital to Hospital.

The presentation resulted in an agreement on Rotary Club Paterno-Alto Simeto and other Rotary Clubs in the region supporting the development of children’s cardiology and creating a cardio surgery center on the basis of Rivne Oblast Children’s Hospital.

In course of their stay in Italy, the Ukrainian delegation visited the Vincenzo Hospital in Taormina. In part, the visited the Cardio Surgery Unit, where a little girl from Rivne oblast is going through the preparation for a complicated surgery. Head of the Pediatric Unit of Rivne Oblast Children’s Hospital, head children’s cardiologist of Rivne oblast Oksana Lozova, was present at the diagnostic cardiac catheterization, basing on which, cardio surgeons chose the strategy for the surgical interference.

An important part of the MELO project is the fact that, with the support from the Italian partners, it becomes possible to provide emergency surgical aid to children with grave pathologies, experience exchange between international patient care institutions and medical staff, creating psychological support and children’s neuropsychiatry centers for the youngest patients. This will improve the access to innovative technologies in the sphere of medicine and upgrade Ukrainian specialists’ professional skills.

Recall that February 12, 2010, the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation and L.I.CO.S. Onlus Italian Laboratory for International Cooperation and Development signed a Memorandum of Cooperation within the framework of the Foundation’s Hospital to Hospital program and L.I.CO.S. Onlus’s MELO Project.
