April 20, 2010, a regular meeting of the Public Council at the Ministry of Health of Ukraine was held on the subject Disease Prevention as a Guarantee of the Future Healthy Country. Among the participants of the meeting were Minister of Health of Ukraine Zinoviy Mytnyk, Director of the Medical Aid Development Dept. at MHU Myroslava Zhdanova, and representatives of NGOs dealing with medical issues. Head of the Public Council Oleh Musiy presided over the meeting. The Ukraine 3000 Foundation was represented by Inna Holovanchuk.
The meeting discussed disease prevention, healthy lifestyle, and Public Council organizational issues.
In course of the discussion Minister Zinoviy Mytnyk said, “Prevention is the cornerstone of medicine not only in Ukraine but in all countries. Today we have to, first of all, contain our pessimism ant tune ourselves for healthy optimism.”
All the speakers shared the same idea: disease prevention is a guarantee of nation’s health. Neglecting prevention measures means creating preconditions for a deterioration of the situation in nation’s health.
The Public Council is a permanent central public collegial consultative, expert, and supervisory body, furthering an optimum balance between needs and interests of the public and state, patients and medical staff, health protection facilities and NGOs, in order to secure healthy lifestyle, prevent diseases and disabilities, provide for availability, due quality, and effectiveness of trained medical aid, protecting the rights of patients and medical workers, effective functioning of the health protection system, proper use of the funds, carrying out public control on the work of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and health protection facilities.
